Harper’s 2nd Birthday

We celebrated Harper’s 2nd birthday on Saturday and boy did I eat my face off! I wanted a more scaled down event as compared to her 1st birthday. I did not want to cook for 50 people this time! We had a family only shindig with the grandparents, aunts, one cousin and Michelle with her two kiddos!

Because we had a smaller party and I wanted to keep it casual, chicken and waffles were on the menu. Michelle brought her awesome sausage dip and a fiesta ranch dip that I love! I was busy in the kitchen so I have zero pictures. I know! Bad blogger. I’m going to just ask everyone to forward pictures that they took of Harper’s Pokemon party. Yes, my little girl likes Pokemon and Togepi is her favorite. Ha! We aren’t raising her to think she can only like “pink and frilly” and that drives her traditional grandparents nuts.

Michelle was able to capture a picture before Harper (with some assistance) cut her cake. She didn’t want to sit still so her body is blurry. Half of our pictures look like this now! Ha!

Mike and I will celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary this Friday so I’m going to need to really keep my nutrition in check until then. I want to indulge a little that night. Moderation.

Finding YOUR Fit

This post may come off as preachy but that isn’t my intention. You’ve been warned. Ha!
My wonderful trainer has me set up with a program that I can do from home or at the gym. Because we’re at the point in the semester where we have back to back breaks, this was desperately needed. When the university is closed, the gym is closed. That is pretty much the only major con of my gym so I’ll take it. I had most of last week off for Thanksgiving so the home plans were used except for one day because I had too much chest congestion and a slight fever. Boo!
I’ve heard a lot of women say that they would love to get in shape but they can’t afford gym memberships or cant find the time to leave the house. I here ya girl and I’m here to offer my unsolicited opinion.
I did most of my Jamie Eason Live Fit Trainer from home with dumbbells and resistance bands after Harper went to bed at night. What I “couldn’t” do from home I did at the gym. If I had taken the time to examine the workouts and what areas of the body they targeted, I’m sure I would have been able to do all of it at home. Or I would’ve made up my own program that was comparable. At that point, I just wanted to jumpstart my weightlifting and for me…Jamie was the way to go.
There are a lot of other programs through bodybuilding.com that you can do from home for FREE. My favorite price. Ha! If you are in a situation where you can and are willing to shell out money for a program like Insanity or Piyo…check out beachbody.com. I had great results with Insanity and loved Chalean Extreme until I got pregnant. I had a high risk pregnancy and wasn’t able to complete the program. Y’all know that I’m a proud member of the Tone It Up community and there are free TIU workouts on their website and YouTube channel. Karena and Katrina also have exercise dvd’s that are much cheaper than anything you’d get from beachbody.com. In most cases, the beachbody programs come with a nutrition guide to get you through the program of your choice successfully. With Tone It Up, there is a nutrition plan that you can purchase separately if you’d like. I got the nutrition plan for my birthday and love it! Karena and Katrina are constantly adding recipes so for me its worth the money. The nutrition plan aims to educate as well.
In a world where social media is booming, there are a large number of personal trainers who can offer online coaching. This is usually for someone (like me) who needs direction and accountability but doesn’t want/need in-person guidance. The only “me time” I get is when I’m at the gym and I treasure that. You will want to make sure that the person is actually qualified, an excellent communicator and passionate. If they don’t have philosophies that match your own…keep it moving. You also need to be willing to put in work. Don’t waste your money or their time.

Turkey, Trees and Weights

Hello fine people! Thanksgiving has come and gone with no additional inches to the waistband for me. Admittedly, I woke up on Thanksgiving morning with my throat on fire so food was of little interest to me. I had to apologize in advance to my husband because I couldn’t really smell and I couldn’t taste anything…both of those senses are crucial when you’re cooking. Luckily, everything turned out wonderfully! Normally, my mother-in-law cooks a Caribbean Thanksgiving feast but I was tasked with hosting last minute. Because I grew up eating turkey and Southern fixings on Turkey Day, that’s what we had at my house. I was able to find healthy versions of our favorite sides so that was a double win!

Turkey Carving Done Right

This is how we carve turkeys. Be afraid.

We put on a Christmas movie, poured apple cider and put the tree up after dinner! I still need to make the bow so a picture of the entire tree will come soon. I can’t decide if I want to use the plaid fabric I made some of the ornaments from for the bow or if I want it to be a solid red.

Hello December

I went shopping around for heavier weights for home because I want to get ready for my upcoming break. I’ll have about a week and a half off and the university’s gym will be closed during that time so I need to add to my home gym. More hex dumbbells and an EZ curl bar are on my wishlist for Santa!

You Get What You Ask For {Fitness}

I finally reached out to the trainer I wanted and got a “yes”! Who the heck takes on a new training program right before Thanksgiving? Is that what y’all are thinking? I questioned it myself so no offense would be taken. Ha! Accountability.

The program she has written out is intense but she wants to “push me”. I need that. While I love bodybuilding.com and the training programs they have on their site I need someone to check-in with. Someone to help me figure out what works, what doesn’t and how to fix little issues. I’ve even been more conscious of what goes into my mouth because this relationship goes both ways.

The last thing I want to do is ask for her help, have her set aside the time to write out schedules and then not pull my share. Nope!

On a typical day, there aren’t very many ladies in the weight room at my gym. You see some of the guys smirk at lady lifters and some even look at which dumbbells you pick up to see how heavy you’re lifting! Rude. After my first superset of shoulders and biceps, a guy actually stood beside and copied everything I did! He had no shame y’all. I don’t blame him, the workouts are killer.

Don’t worry, her identity will be revealed if I get permission…or if she outs herself.
